My experience at the Valencia Sustainability Hackathon: an opportunity to learn, meet people and contribute innovative ideas to the fight against climate change

Alberto was one of the participants in the Valencia Sustainability Hackathon, in partnership with DesirMED and the Generalitat Valenciana, which focused on the prevention of forest fires. 

My experience at the Valencia Green Capital 2024 Hackathon was very enriching. When I received the invitation to participate, I had never heard of it, even though it was not the first edition held in Valencia. However, when they explained to me what it was about and the type of challenges that were posed, I did not think twice to join. It seemed like an incredible opportunity to learn, meet people and contribute innovative ideas to solve challenges related to sustainability.

The Hackathon was held on 29 and 30 November in the Las Naves and Harinera buildings, two key spaces in the city of Valencia that have been the foundation of many innovation processes. 

During the two days, we were lucky enough to have interventions by experts who guided us in different aspects of the Hackathon process, from how to generate ideas to how to effectively communicate the final proposals. These sessions helped us improve our work.

I worked on the challenge posed by the Generalitat Valenciana within the DesirMED project. Our objective was to develop a strategy to raise awareness among people living in urban-forest interface areas about the importance of preventing forest fires. At first it was difficult for us to shape the idea because the subject is very complex and covers many variables. However, after several rounds of brainstorming and intense debates, we managed to find a clear approach, and from that moment on everything flowed much more naturally and quickly.

Our proposal combined several actions: giving children a leading role as agents of change in their communities, implementing self-protection certificates for homes through self-assessment, and creating a neighbourhood council responsible for promoting the proper management of private land. We wanted neighbours to feel like they were an active part of fire prevention, reinforcing the sense of community and mutual care.

This process made me think a lot about the importance of self-responsibility in forest fire prevention. It is not just about protecting ourselves, but also about taking care of those around us. In the end, it is an issue that, directly or indirectly, affects us all, and it is crucial to raise awareness in order to avoid tragedies that can be prevented through small, responsible actions.

Despite working against the clock, we really enjoyed the process. Each member of the team contributed their personal and professional perspective and, together, we managed to develop a proposal that left us very satisfied. Between sessions, we also had moments to relax, chat, and enjoy coffee while sharing more informal moments. Although our proposal did not win first place, the experience of presenting it to the jury and working to generate solutions to a real challenge for the Valencia region was very enriching.

What I take away most from this Hackathon is the importance of working as a team with motivation and objectives that are truly worthwhile. It was an incredible opportunity to learn, contribute and connect with people who share my interest in innovation and sustainability. I hope to have the opportunity to participate in more initiatives like this in the future.

Mi experiencia en el Valencia Sustainability Hackathon: una oportunidad para aprender, conocer gente y contribuir con ideas innovadoras a la lucha contra el cambio climático

Alberto fue uno de los participantes en el Valencia Sustainability Hackathon, patrocinado por DesirMED y la Generalitat Valenciana, que tenía come enfoque la prevención de incendios forestales. 

Mi experiencia en el Hackaton Valencia Capital Verde 2024 fue muy enriquecedora. Cuando me llamaron para participar en el evento, jamás había escuchado hablar de él, pese a que no era la primera edición que se celebra en Valencia. Sin embargo, cuando me explicaron de qué se trataba y el tipo de retos que se planteaban, no dudé en participar. Me pareció una oportunidad increíble para aprender, conocer gente y contribuir con ideas innovadoras a solucionar retos relacionados con la sostenibilidad.

El Hackaton se celebró en los días 29 y 30 de noviembre en el edificio Las Naves y la Harinera, dos espacios clave en la ciudad de Valencia que han sido origen de muchos procesos de innovación.

Durante las dos jornadas, tuvimos la suerte de contar con intervenciones de expertos que nos guiaron en distintos aspectos en el proceso de innovación, desde cómo generar ideas hasta cómo comunicar eficazmente las propuestas finales. Estas sesiones nos sirvieron para mejorar nuestro trabajo.

Tuve la suerte de trabajar en el reto planteado por la Generalitat Valenciana dentro del proyecto DesirMED. Nuestro objetivo era desarrollar una estrategia para concienciar a las personas que viven en zonas de interfaz urbano-forestal sobre la importancia de la autorresponsabilidad para prevenir incendios forestales. Al principio nos costó darle forma a la idea porque el tema es muy complejo y abarca muchas variables. Sin embargo, tras varias rondas de lluvia de ideas y debates intensos, logramos encontrar un enfoque claro, y a partir de ese momento todo fluyó de forma mucho más natural y rápida.

Nuestra propuesta combinaba varias acciones: dar protagonismo a los niños y niñas como agentes de cambio en sus comunidades, implementar certificados de autoprotección para las viviendas mediante la autoevaluación y crear un gabinete vecinal responsable de promover la gestión adecuada de los terrenos privados. Queríamos que los vecinos se sintieran parte activa en la prevención de incendios, reforzando el sentido de comunidad y cuidado compartido.

Este proceso me hizo reflexionar mucho sobre la importancia de la autorresponsabilidad en la prevención de incendios forestales. No se trata solo de protegernos a nosotros mismos, sino también de cuidar a quienes nos rodean. Al final, es un tema que, directa o indirectamente, nos afecta a todas y todos, y es crucial tomar conciencia para evitar tragedias que pueden prevenirse a través de pequeñas acciones responsables.

A pesar de trabajar contrarreloj, disfrutamos mucho del proceso. Cada miembro del equipo aportó su perspectiva personal y profesional y, juntos, logramos desarrollar una propuesta que nos dejó muy satisfechos. Entre sesiones, también tuvimos momentos para relajarnos, charlar y disfrutar del café mientras compartíamos momentos más informales. Aunque nuestra propuesta no obtuvo el primer puesto, la experiencia de presentarla ante el jurado y de trabajar para generar soluciones a un reto real de la Generalitat, fue muy enriquecedor.

Lo que más me llevo de este Hackaton es la importancia de trabajar en equipo con motivación y objetivos que de verdad valen la pena. Fue una oportunidad increíble para aprender, aportar y conectar con personas que comparten mi interés por la innovación y la sostenibilidad. Espero tener la oportunidad de participar en más iniciativas como esta en el futuro.
