"DesirMED - Demonstration and mainstreaming of Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilient transformation in the Mediterranean" is a project funded under the Horizon Europe Programme prioritizing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), innovative technologies and social practices to accelerate the transformation towards climate adaptation and resilience in the Mediterranean.

Why and How
Climate change is an increasing threat in Europe and around the world, affecting social stability, public health, and well-being. The Mediterranean region, in particular, is highly vulnerable to climate change and is one of the least economically developed areas in Europe. To effectively deal with this challenge, we need to move from small, isolated efforts to comprehensive, transformative strategies and approaches, supporting policies at all levels, that help make communities more resilient to climate change.
In DesirMED, we help regional leaders and communities in the Mediterranean to develop their adaptation pathways for climate resilience by using innovative technologies and promoting inclusive social practices.
DesirMED involves a multilevel set of actors in 5 Demonstrating regions (DRs) and 3 Replicating Regions (RRs) working hand- in-hand with scientific partners to foster holistic approaches to implement transformative adaptation. Overall, DesirMED will strengthen knowledge and capabilities of Mediterranean regions and communities to take leadership and ownership in their transformative Climate Change Adaptation journeys and accelerate the implementation of transformative solutions required to increase their resilience over the long term.
We invite various target groups to get involved in the process, understand the risks and benefits of NbS, exchange ideas, take action, be part of this transformation, and ensure a more sustainable and resilient future for all.

In DesirMED, we prioritize the use of NbS to preserve and restore ecosystems, increase climate resilience and sustainably manage the environment, while providing wider long-term socio-economic benefits.
Objectives
DesirMED is funded under the call HORIZON-MISS-2022-CLIMA-01-06-Research and Innovation actions in support of the implementation of the Adaptation to Climate Change Mission. DesirMED contributes to the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change which focuses on supporting EU regions, cities and local authorities in their efforts to build resilience against the impacts of climate change. DesirMED is one of the seven projects funded under the Climate Adaptation Mission so far, and one of the two projects that focus on the Mediterranean biogeographical region.
