Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region (DR5) - Pilot Activities Overview
The Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region (DR5) is implementing four pilot actions responding to the main climate change challenges of the territory. These pilots are designed as knowledge hubs for testing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), low-cost technologies, and climate-resilient production systems.
Pilot Action 2 – NbS for Flash Floods Mitigation
Pilot Action Title
Check dams as a Nature Based Solution against flooding
Region Involved
Pilot Location
Nea Peramos, Paggaion Municipality
Climate Hazard Addressed
Flash floods and recurrent flood events
General Objective
This pilot explores the hydrological and hydraulic impact of small, low-height (<5m) check dams as cost-effective alternatives to traditional grey infrastructure. It aims to reduce flood peaks, inundation areas, and flow volume at the catchment scale while increasing concentration time.
Technical Description
The project is built around two key implementation pillars:
- Multi-Model Simulation: Using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS 2D modeling to investigate the influence of check dams on water flow dynamics.
- Field Implementation: Construction of small-scale gabion check dams in the mountainous (upper) part of the catchment to validate modeling results.
- Data Integration: Utilizing DEM (5m resolution) and geospatial tools (QGIS, Python) to assess real-world efficiency.
Foreseen Benefits
- Improved protection for local residents and communities against recurrent medium-scale flood events.
- Integration of findings into broader flood management strategies for local government and emergency services.
- Cost-effective flood mitigation that provides additional environmental and social benefits.
