Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region (DR5) - Pilot Activities Overview

The Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region (DR5) is implementing four pilot actions responding to the main climate change challenges of the territory. These pilots are designed as knowledge hubs for testing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), low-cost technologies, and climate-resilient production systems.

Pilot Action 4 – Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment

Pilot Action Title
Constructed Wetlands for wastewater treatment and water re-use
Region Involved
Pilot Location
Messoropi and Moustheni Villages
Climate Hazard Addressed
Drought and water-resource pressure
General Objective

This pilot focuses on establishing ecological wastewater treatment systems for small rural communities. The goal is to provide secondary treatment for municipal wastewater, enabling water reuse in agriculture and drought mitigation.

Technical Description

Two Constructed Wetlands (CWs) are designed with specific technical units:

  • Messoropi CW: Designed for 825 p.e., featuring anaerobic tanks, vertical flow beds, and a horizontal flow bed.
  • Moustheni CW: Designed for 1,130 p.e., including siphons, sludge beds, and a chlorination tank.
  • Process: The systems combine physical, chemical, and biological processes within engineered cells fitted with liners to prevent soil infiltration.
Foreseen Benefits
  • Optimized wastewater management and water saving for local agricultural needs.
  • Provision of a stable secondary water source for irrigation during drought periods.
  • Cost-effective, ecological treatment solution for isolated rural communities.
