On the 29-30th November, the Valencia Region cluster (Generalitat Valenciana, VAERSA and Medi XXI GSA) participated as a challenger in the Valencia Sustainability Hackathon, an event that brings together the best talent to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems posed by several private and public entities related to the environment, sustainability and the circular economy. A total of 60 participants and 6 challengers joined the event.
The challenge presented by the Valencian partners focused on the social dimension of wildfire prevention strategies, seeking an answer to the question: How can we increase the social perception of wildfire risk in wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas?
Residents in WUI areas are often unaware of the risks their homes face and do not realise that owning a property in such places also means owning the risks that threat it. Moreover, initiatives implemented by the Generalitat Valenciana—such as informational talks, brochures, and technical guides—frequently fall short of their intended impact and suffer from low participation rates.
When proposing this challenge, the Valencian cluster aimed at a solution capable of enhancing public awareness and engagement in fire prevention and at fostering a sense of shared responsibility among residents, transforming them into proactive agents in reducing their vulnerability. Ultimately, the solution should have the maximum impact, reaching all sectors of society.
A total of two teams of five participants each worked intensively for two days to devise and develop their solutions. Results were highly promising and will significantly contribute to advancing the Valencia cluster’s objective within the DesirMED Project: to increase the resilience of the Valencian Community to wildfires.

Los pasados 29-30 de noviembre, el clúster Regional Valenciano (Generalitat Valenciana, VAERSA y Medi XXI GSA) participó como entidad retadora en el Valencia Sustainability Hackathon, un evento que reúne al mejor talento para buscar soluciones innovadoras a problemas planteados por diferentes organizaciones públicas y privadas relacionados con el medio ambiente, la sociedad y la economía circular. Un total de 60 participantes y 6 entidades retadoras se unieron al evento.
El reto propuesto por los socios valencianos puso su foco en la dimensión social de la prevención de incendios forestales, buscando responder a la pregunta: ¿Cómo incrementar la percepción social del riesgo de incendio en las zonas de interfaz urbano forestal?
Los residentes de estos espacios rara vez son conscientes del riesgo al que están expuestas sus viviendas y no llegan a entender que, al tener una propiedad próxima a terreno forestal, son también propietarios del riesgo en el que esta se encuentra. Además, las iniciativas llevadas a cabo por la Generalitat Valenciana (charlas, elaboración de trípticos, guías técnicas…) no llegan a tener el impacto esperado y suelen contar con baja participación.
Por ello, al plantear este reto, el clúster valenciano buscaba encontrar una solución que fuera capaz de incrementar la sensibilización de la ciudadanía y su implicación en la prevención de incendios, fomentando un sentido de responsabilidad compartida y convirtiéndolos en agentes activos en la reducción de su vulnerabilidad. Todo ello generando el máximo impacto que permitiera llegar a todos los sectores de la sociedad.
Un total de dos equipos de 5 participantes cada uno trabajaron intensamente durante dos jornadas para idear y desarrollar sus soluciones. Los resultados fueron muy prometedores y contribuirán significativamente al objetivo que que el clúster valenciano se ha propuesto en el proyecto DesirMED: aumentar la resiliencia de la región valenciana frente a los incendios forestales.
