RR2: Potenza Province, Italy
The Province of Potenza is one of the two Provinces of Basilicata Region, together with Matera Province. Covering an area of 6.500 km², it counts 100 municipalities and has a population of 378.000 inhabitants with a population density of 60 inhab./km². Its capital city, Potenza, has 67.000 residents, while the average population per Municipality is 3.800 residents.
Main economic activities: Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (27%), Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (22%), Construction (14%), Accommodation and food services activities (9%) and Manufacturing (9%).
Current climate impacts and vulnerabilities
The main risks posed in the Region include droughts, desertification, wildfires and floods, with compounding impacts of earthquakes and landslides.
Transformation scenarios through DesirMED
The focus in Potenza Province is shifted towards improved governance for climate
resilience and potential innovations through NbS, addressing the following challenges
- Overall governance’s improving process
- Lack of resources. Need for improving the capacities of attracting innovative resources including NbS actors.
- Lack of adaptive strategies and public support
- Low dialogue with stakeholders and low public awareness high urban and communities sprawl. Need for progressive structural territorial requalification and regeneration, including NbS deployment.
- Territorial/urban structures unfit to cope with disasters and Climate Changes effects. Need for progressive structural urban requalification including NbS.
