Demonstrating Regions
DR3: Sardinia Region, Italy
Covering an area of 24.090 km², the Region of Sardinia is populated by approximately 1.6 milion inhabitants (2023) with a population density of 65.16 inhab./km² and counts 377 municipalities.
Its coastal extension is about 2.650 km (including the smaller islands) with rocky coasts, high or low (1.782 km; 67%), beaches (580 km; 22%) and artificial coasts (282 km; 11%).
Main economic activities include: Tourism, Agriculture, Fishing, and Technology.
Current climate impacts and vulnerabilities
The main climate impacts include sea level rise and increase of extreme
weather events, posing threats such as biodiversity and ecosystem services loss
and coastal erosion.
Transformation scenarios through DesirMED
Main intervention areas will be focused on addressing the degradation of marine
ecosystems including a Region-wide study of Climate Change impact on beaches mainly
caused by sea level rise and increase of extreme events. Another effort will be a Region-wide study on green
infrastructures and associated ecosystem services, integrating methodological approaches
and impact assessment studies for developing Green Infrastructure Strategy and for
coastal and transition areas and mainstreaming of Climate Change adaptation into
regional plans.
Prioritization of NbS:
- Region-wide investigation and specific case-study about the reservoir sediments reuse as a material for shoreline natural nourishment, which is a NbS addressing the coastal erosion hazard.
- Posidonia oceanica (seagrass) meadows will be implemented as ecological corridors that will be monitored for changes in their ecosystem services in response to climate change.
