On the 30th of January 2025, in Massama (OR), at the Forestas headquarters, the first DesirMED regional workshop of the Sardinia Region took place, titled "The Future of Beaches and Coastal Ecosystems in Sardinia: What Actions to Address Climate Challenges?".
The Autonomous Region of Sardinia, through the Department of Environmental Protection, is a partner of the project, leading the Italian DesirMED Regional cluster.
General Objectives of the workshop
- Study the impacts of climate change on beaches (coastline and Posidonia seagrass).
- Experiment with innovative management models for nature conservation using nature-based solutions (NbS).
- Develop a regional strategy for ecosystem services, to be tested in the pilot area of the Marine Protected Area Penisola del Sinis – Isola di Mal di Ventre.
The event brought together key stakeholders involved in beach and coastal systems, including:
- Public administrators
- Civil society representatives
- Academics and climate change researchers
- Entrepreneurs, professional fishers, and representatives from the sports and association sectors
The participation of such diverse actors enabled the launch of a territorial participatory process, integrating different needs to identify feasible and shared solutions. The workshop aimed to:
- Achieve a shared understanding of challenges, risks, and opportunities related to climate change.
- Create a common vision to mobilize stakeholders and develop a concrete action plan.
- Engage participants in a collaborative process, leveraging their expertise and perspectives.
- Explore the regional potential for a transformation that strengthens the resilience of coastal communities, looking towards a sustainable and innovative future.
The first regional workshop of 2025 was a unique opportunity to build connections, foster dialogue, and develop shared solutions for a more resilient and sustainable Mediterranean.
