Meet DesirMED's Climate Ambassadors: Sofia Calvet

"Traditionally, they (mimosa trees) would bloom around April, once spring had already started, but now they are flowering earlier and earlier."

I love nature, animals, and the harmony among all beings that live on this planet.

This passion led me to study environmental science and, within my means, to seek jobs that allow me to contribute to and implement behavioral changes in favor of nature.

It's what drives me to feel comfortable at work.

I currently live in Gipuzkoa and am trying to work independently on environmental projects globally.

While I was involved in my work with the Xunta de Galicia (Galician Regional Government) in Santiago de Compostela, I was also influenced by the awareness and (positive) activism of young people regarding the climate situation.

There is a need for changes in the policies of the Galician community; more visibility and action are needed on environmental issues, and there needs to be a balance between the capacity to accept change - whether by humans, governments, policies, etc. - and the fight to slow it down. It's not all one or the other; I live by the sea, and I notice it in the water temperature, the occasional strong tides, the severe weather events, and the high temperatures. The decline in the quality of the food we consume - we need to make people understand that this affects their daily lives and that it's not going to get any worse. Society believes that climate change is "far away" (for example, the melting of glaciers). We must educate and raise awareness that changes are happening in our immediate environment. Young people, in particular, need to be shown what can happen so they can react as soon as possible.
