Adapting to climate change: combining science, community, and concrete action
Climate change is not a distant threat – it is already shaping our daily lives and environment. I live in Split, a city on the Adriatic Sea, where I research ocean physics and climate change at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. My scientific work focuses on monitoring, projecting, and modeling changes in the ocean and atmosphere and understanding their consequences for coastal and marine ecosystems. But science alone is not enough - it is important to transfer this knowledge to the community and encourage people to take action.
In addition to my academic work, I have been leading projects at Eureka for many years, an association I founded to popularise science and STEM education for children, young people and teachers. I am currently leading the Svjetionik (=Lighthouse) project, which focuses on climate change and its consequences for local communities. The project includes practical activities, field workshops, and education that encourages children and young people to recognize the challenges in their environment and find solutions themselves.
For me, adapting to climate change means recognizing the real changes in the environment and finding ways to adapt to them effectively. Every day, I feel the impact of climate change through heat waves, changes in the sea, more frequent fires, and changes in ecosystems. Adaptation should not only exist in theory—we must know how to apply scientific knowledge in practice, educate people, carry out projects, and develop local initiatives that strengthen community resilience.
At Eureka and through the Svjetionik project, we teach young people that every action, no matter how small, has an impact. This can be collecting rainwater, planting trees, or designing small research projects. Such activities not only increase their understanding of natural processes, but also motivate them to become agents of change in their schools and communities. Combining theory and practice allows them to understand that knowledge is not only found in books, but also in everyday life and concrete action.
I believe that a combination of science, education, and community action can offer real solutions for adapting to climate change. Local projects, field workshops, and collaboration with young people and communities help build a resilient society. This approach ensures that knowledge does not remain confined to laboratories, but brings about real change in the environment and people's way of life.
Participating in the DesirMED initiative is an opportunity to share my story and experience with Mediterranean communities, but also to learn from other change makers. Adapting to climate change starts with small steps, but through collaboration, education, and practical projects, these steps can have a far-reaching impact. My goal is to inspire others to recognize climate challenges and work with young people and communities to find creative and sustainable solutions.
For me, adaptation is not just a scientific topic—it is a combination of knowledge, creative action, and shared responsibility. Every workshop, every project, and every small action can become an example that inspires others to get involved, build a more resilient community, and together shape a sustainable future for the Mediterranean.

Prilagodba klimatskim promjenama: spajanje znanosti, zajednice i konkretnih akcija
Klimatske promjene nisu daleka prijetnja – one već oblikuju naš svakodnevni život i okoliš. Živim u Splitu, gradu uz Jadransko more, gdje na Prirodoslovno-matematičkom fakultetu proučavam fiziku mora i klimatske promjene koje itekako osjećamo. Moj znanstveni rad fokusiran je na praćenje, projiciranje i modeliranje promjena u moru i atmosferi te na razumijevanje njihovih posljedica za obalne i morske ekosustave. Ali znanost sama po sebi nije dovoljna – važno je to znanje prenijeti zajednici i potaknuti ljude da aktivno djeluju.
Uz akademski rad, dugi niz godina vodim projekte u udruzi Eureka, koju sam osnovala kako bih popularizirala znanost i STEM obrazovanje za djecu, mlade i nastavnike. Trenutno vodim projekt Svjetionik, u kojem se posebno bavimo klimatskim promjenama i njihovim posljedicama za lokalne zajednice. Projekt uključuje praktične aktivnosti, terenske radionice i edukaciju koja djecu i mlade potiče da prepoznaju izazove u svom okruženju i sami pronađu rješenja.
Za mene prilagodba klimatskim promjenama znači prepoznati stvarne promjene u okolišu i pronaći načine kako im se učinkovito prilagoditi. Svakodnevno osjećam utjecaj klimatskih promjena kroz toplinske valove, promjene u moru, sve češće požare i promjene u ekosustavima. Prilagodba ne smije biti samo prisutna samo u teoriji – moramo znati kako koristiti znanstveno znanje u praksi, educirati ljude, provoditi projekte i razvijati lokalne inicijative koje jačaju otpornost zajednica.
U Eureki i kroz projekt Svjetionik, mlade učimo da svaka akcija, koliko god mala, ima učinak. To može biti prikupljanje kišnice, sadnja biljaka ili osmišljavanje malih istraživačkih projekata. Takve aktivnosti ne samo da povećavaju njihovo razumijevanje prirodnih procesa, nego ih i motiviraju da postanu nositelji promjena u svojim školama i zajednicama. Povezivanje teorije i prakse omogućuje im da shvate da znanje nije samo u knjigama, nego i u svakodnevnom životu i konkretnoj akciji.
Vjerujem da kombinacija znanosti, obrazovanja i zajedničkog djelovanja može ponuditi stvarna rješenja za prilagodbu klimatskim promjenama. Lokalni projekti, terenske radionice i suradnja s mladima i zajednicama pomažu u izgradnji otpornijeg društva. Takav pristup osigurava da se znanje ne zadržava u laboratorijima, nego da oblikuje stvarne promjene u okolišu i načinu života ljudi.
Sudjelovanje u inicijativi DesirMED prilika je da svoju priču i iskustvo podijelim s mediteranskim zajednicama, ali i da učim od drugih pokretača promjena. Prilagodba klimatskim promjenama počinje malim koracima, ali kroz suradnju, edukaciju i praktične projekte ti koraci mogu imati dalekosežan učinak. Moj cilj je inspirirati druge da prepoznaju klimatske izazove i zajedno s mladima i zajednicama pronađu kreativna i održiva rješenja.
Prilagodba, za mene, nije samo znanstvena tema – ona je kombinacija znanja, kreativnog djelovanja i zajedničke odgovornosti. Svaka radionica, svaki projekt i svaka mala akcija može postati primjer koji potiče druge da se uključe, grade otporniju zajednicu i zajedno oblikuju održivu budućnost Mediterana.
